“Every 10 years I  give myself a special present for my birthday, an adventure if possible. This year I’m celebrating my 60th birthday.”

 

“I have these 2 tattoos for inspiration while I walk: ‘Keep going’ and ‘Choose love’. The former is my new motto and the latter…, well, ‘Choose love’ feels pertinent right now. They are temporary, and they fade a little each day I walk, but I prefer to believe that what’s really happening is that I’m, somehow, absorbing their meanings.”

 

” When I was 20 I wanted to be a playwright. I got a degree in communications and had a play produced, but I was impatient. I thought “Maybe this isn’t really my thing, maybe I should look for other opportunities.” So I did what any reasonable person would do: I went to a psychic. ‘Will I ever be a successful writer?’ I asked her. ‘Yes,’ she said, “you will write things that teach people and will be read by many people around the world, in many languages.’ I was happy and relieved, and continued working as a writer. Time passed by, career opportunities developed and I took them. So here I am. Was she right? Yes, but not in the way I had imagined. I write copy for beautiful sales catalogs for a big, big car corporation, and they get translated into many languages and are widely read all over the world, helping people to choose the right car to buy, but, you know…, that wasn’t really what I was thinking about! The funny thing is that when I first started working as a writer for big agencies, I never intended to write about cars because ‘I’m an artist’ and all that, so…, yeah, it’s quite ironic. But as long as I enjoy it, I’ll keep going.”

“Me he hecho estos tatuajes para que me inspiren mientras camino: ‘Keep going’ y ‘Choose love.’ El primero es mi nuevo lema para el resto de mi vida. Son temporales y están desapareciendo según voy avanzando, pero prefiero pensar que lo que pasa es que estoy absorbiendo su significado.”

 

“Con 20 años quería ser dramaturga, escribir para el teatro. Estudié comunicación y empecé a trabajar en una compañía, pero al poco tiempo empecé a sentir que me estaba quedando rezagada, que mis compañeros iban saliendo adelante, recibiendo aplausos y teniendo éxito, y que quizás yo no había nacido para esto y debía cambiar de profesión. Ante la duda, hice lo razonable: fui a una adivina. Le pregunté, ‘Voy a llegar a ser una buena escritora’. ‘Sí,’ me dijo, ‘vas a tener una carrera de éxito. Y vas a ser leida por mucha gente, en muchos idiomas.’ Me sentí aliviada, volví a trabajar, y fue pasando el tiempo. ¿Tenia razón? Sí, pero no como yo esperaba; sí que tengo una carrera de éxito. Escribo los catálogos de una importante marca de coches y la realidad es que, sí, son leidos por mucha gente y están traducidos a muchos idiomas, pero…bueno, ya te imaginas que eso no es a lo que me refería. Lo divertido es que cuando empecé a dedicarme a la publicidad juré nunca escribir sobre coches, porque ‘Yo soy una artista’ y todo eso, así que ya ves…, bastante irónico. Eso sí, mientras me siga divirtiendo, voy a seguir haciéndolo.”
